halloweeeeeen! yippie! the best part about dressing up, for me, is getting everything together. this part is almost more exciting than the actual wearing of it for the actual occasion. this year i told myself that i would make everything from scratch. i have the time, so i'm sticking to it. none of this buy something, alter it, modify it, and then piece something together. im talking creating everything from something that looked nothing like the finished product. how excitingggg.

so, on to the top. i did have a beaded top that was even the right color- thought about using it, but it just didn't seem right. i am so much happier with how this project turned out. after pondering for a while (a week, which is a long time for me to ponder about how to craft something and not have a good option) i came up with an idea that had me screaming 'i am a crafting genuis!' at my bf's face. well, if it worked. technically it seemed like it would, i looked it up to see if others have done it on this scale, and i couldnt find it (although before, a girl i saw did it in a makeup tutorial which gave me the idea)

but i am a crafting f-ing genius, and this is how it came out

and i actually dont have to wear a plastic shell that ties string around me neck, cutting off circulation to stay on, and makes me look like im a big sausage. no thanks.

So this is my version of a super cute idea from Phoung N.'s Ipod sandwich cover, although mine is a cover for an ipad and its mostly for sewing

i think i need to add a bacon piece to keep the sandwich closed (think of it as mayo!) and a little velcro to keep the ipad from wandering out. perfect for a picnic.

pom pom massacre

there are a lot of things i can make. most people would consider me crafty...

well one of the easiest things that my grandmother used to make all the time and taught me as a child (did i suck at it then too and she just never told me?) was to make a pom pom out of yarn

i thought they were incredibly dorky and embarrassing i was young, but now i recently bought a pair of kate spade socks

(im kinda a sockaholic- in that im addicted to sockahol)

and bought a yarnish bag with bigg pom poms on the front, a pom pommed hair do-dad, and keychain.

i never thought that i'd have so many pom pom pom pom pom pom pom (pom flows off the fingers toooo easily) but i long for them even more now that i know I CANNOT MAKE THEM.

i want to make shaped ones like zakka life, but i can't even make circular ones.

plus it pisses me off that the knot to tie it off is so impermanent... we should use glue too... maybe i'll give it another try in remembrance of the shag rug i grew up with.

too bad im using for my mermaid costume, and probably then some. inspired by my glittered take-me-home flats from my dorothy costume from last year, the runaways, and david bowie- course.

bought these at ross for under $17, actually i have a similar wedge pair that i bought for $70 (just the straps and color are different)

glitter for $3 a tube

used some craft tacky glue (i used clear this time, but the white came out fine last year)

did a layer of the fine glitter on the bottom wedge part and then a layer of the course, big, chunky glitter over it

the straps i thought it would give it more definition and depth to just do the fine glitter

and do a really thin layer of the glue over it so that it didn't look like you were a unicorn farting glitter as you walk down the street. bom chicka wow wow now any drag queen would call you fierce.

bento box art attempt one:

little bento box cutters make it sooo much easier (although still very time consuming and delicate), I made a thin sheet of egg for my whales and ocean decor

she (i forgot which book this phone photo came from, but it is by far my favorite)

instead of a hot dog, since my bento box was smaller, i chose lil smokies :))) as an octopus

cut out some bologna for the mermaid, some cheese for variety (since i dont eat veggies, i was limited to meats, dairies, and food coloring) and dyed what i need

im going to get cake writers for the little faces so they aren't so shakey.

but yay for my first attempt at the best kind of art, thats the best part if you don't likey- you eaty.

The unbuyers remorse is far worse than buying the $150 peacock serving dish that fits no where and has never been used, and wishing you had. Peace of mind and lying to rest 'what could have been' is worth it. I can't tell you the many sleepless nights that I have thought about the shirt that had the possibility of being the favorite shirt or the set of dishes that could be sitting in my cupboard saying hello to me every morning. Forget could-be's and what-if's. There is a reason why my shopping partners always say i'm a bad influence, which I'm not denying- but better to buy and be sorry, than to not buy and never live it down. Just buy it now.

Kitty Neckties

My cat runs for the damn hills when she sees me pull out the dreaded costume bag. some may say 'poor thing'. MEH. she eats science diet, she has a cold running waterfall fountain, she gets more love than j bieb, and double wide scratch boards up the hoo ha. SHE can cry me a river because the cat gets more attention and treats than i do. she can wear a lobster costume or scuba diving outfit made for a build-a-bear for 5 min at a time. puhleese.

luckily, i made these nifty neckties that even poopy pouty kitties can wear and not be all whiny about because its just like wearing a collar :) so dogs certainly wouldn't mind it. and they are even proportional to them. awww.

and i found some other awesome ties likes ones with bunnies and little elephants, as well as some more business cas ones that will be going up on my etsy berry berry soon!

Bokeh

Supposedly its japanese, but it still sounds weird to me. Some people call it vignetting some call it a bokeh, but whatever it is- its awesome. And surprisingly not too hard...

made these little guys out of black construction paper and made sure no light came through, cut little shapes out of the middle, and made it fit over my lens

couldn't wait till it was dark and used it more as what i would consider a vignette. many many forums dedicated to this argument, probably more that nature vs. nurture....

but those outside lights were too big, and i couldn't properly get them out of focus enough without it cutting off parts of my star- so i wandered inside and busted out the christmas lights.

and the kitty! can't forget the kitty shape.

VMA Hair

I was invited over to a friend's house to watch the VMAs, mind you she texted me an invite to 'watch the vmas' and i didn't know what she was talking about- i thought it was a typo.

I was hoping to see some outfits and some good set designs... overall it was lackluster to say the least, but i did see a trend of rainbow hair.

(see: katy perry trying too hard, and streaks are done)

i actually liked gaga's tie dye hair... rihanna and the others looked like katy perry's hot topic wig from last year- meh, not impressed.

here are some other pictures i found a few weeks ago. i have always dyed or should i say died my hair and last year i really wanted at least three colors... i had my little pony hair syndrome for a few months before i chopped my color tail off.

but nonetheless here are some amazing hair inspirational colorful hair images, i would be so lucky to have a third of the hair of this

afterall, hair is the only accessory you can't take off at the end of the day... well most of us don't.

Succulent Tea Party

i had the urge to do something with tea cups... this happens every six months or so. but i had a alice in wonderland birthday party last summer.

what to do with my left over tea cups?

well i guess i'll just plant in them.

bought 3 succulents for $10 and i just had to buy the venus fly traps for another $10

and a cute little home for them. i swear the fly traps didnt like being moved and clamped on to the sides...

im going to do the rest when i find some other fun holders, as well as but a layer of sod grass on the top of a little metal outdoor table and have a real garden tea party.

Jello Prisms

I always loved when I went to family functions and saw RAINBOW LAYERED JELLO dum, dum, dummm.

im going to have to interview some aunts to ask how they got their refrigerator so straight... i had more paper wadded up in the fridge than a lopsided dive bar.

although my first attempt at making it and adding the step of cutting out little kitties didn't make it easy (of course i also cut out castles, frogs with crowns, and wands) but almost all made it out alive.

Not that that even mattered. The leftovers are just as pretty.

I used the regular 'speed method' on the back of the box, useful for making jello shots, but next time i will use a tad less water and instead of mixing in a splash of milk for the spacer layers, im planning on the fluffer nutter for some creamy froth. I was also thinking about adding some sprite for some fizz instead of water like I used to with my grandmother when i was young :)

Oh well, next time. More rainbowy goodness to come.

The Connection between Colors and Words

Colors are an easy way to convey feeling and different meanings. Designers
have used this to communicate their message, but because the connotations that
colors imply change over time, place, and culture, it is sometimes hard to track
what is current.
“Cymbolism is a new website that attemps to quantify
the association between colors and words, making it simple for designers to
choose the best colors for the desired emotional effects. Cymbolism tracks these
associations over time (and in future versions by user demographics) to help

Its easy and highly entertaining (you keep telling yourself "one more"), look at the word then choose one of the nineteen
colors that you think represents and corresponds with the word. Bet you’d be

Twilighters

I wrote this right after I saw the third installment of the Twilight movies and thought about why I like it, why Tweens like it, and why mothers like it. How is it that a teeny bopper vampire love story can transcend generations to find some common ground? I looked at the most unlikely victim: Mothers

What’s a Twi-Gar?
If the sparkly t-shirted, shrieking Twi-Hard is obsessed about the pop culture
phenomenon known as Twilight, then what is the subculture of Mothers who act
the same and love it just as much?

Twi-gars (Twilight + cougar), Twi-Moms, and TOMs ((Twi-obessed Mom) are the
fanatical women who are enthusiasts, to say the least, of Twilight. One would think that
grown women, who are old enough to be the characters’ parents, wouldn’t be so
enamored with a science fiction love story made and marketed for their tween or teen
children.

Well, it seems that Bella as the lead heroine, was made to appeal to moms as
well as teens. She is the caretaker of her family, always running her fathers
house and doing what’s best for her mother, thinks of herself as the awkward
‘plain Jane’, and is swept away with innocent forbidden love.

These women utilize the Twilight stories as a way to escape, as a how-to
romance guide, or as a way to relive and recapture the past. Some Twi-moms
find Twilight as a way to bond with their daughters. Or perhaps in an economy
full of hard realities, it’s just nice to be swept away with another person’s life and
their problems. Whether it’s at their married love life, their relationships with their
angsty teens, or reminds them of a younger life that seems so far away, Twilight
signifies or can even inspire a second chance.

i have decided long ago that i was going to be a mermaid this Halloween. Although i was a mermaid a few Halloweens ago, i weenied out and just used a metal link top i already had (and used to wear out frequently) and made a tight long skirt from stretchy fabric that had a scale design from Joann's... pfftt. No more half assed costumes. If I'm going to do something- i WILL go all out.

Luckily i am always, and i mean always shopping for occasions that may or may not come around. i bought this beaded shell shaped purse at a Goodwill on Haight. i foresaw that at some point I'd be a mermaid, for some reason or another.

And i saw this costume (like $99.95 or something) and i like the concept of it, but i dont like the price, and i really dont like the idea that i could see someone else wearing it. Plus, i think i can make a better one.

So I bought stretchy mesh like fabric for the "body suit". Living in the city has made me a sedentary foodie that hates walking up hills windy hills, so there is nothing left to do but hit up the closest bar... so the more midriff coverage, the better.

This awesome iridescent medium/tiny sequined material that makes the best- almost like tiny wind chimes- noise

And am going to make a netted ruffle for a more fin like effect like Beckie Newton's gorg dress.

Glitter flies everywhere when I breathe near it, kinda makes it better, like I have my own wind/smoke machine...

And I wanted a beaded like top, not necessarily having to be shell like. So I remembered I had this top that somehow ended up in my hands and was dyed this color. I think Im going to change the color though... maybe purple, perhaps. ive always been a closet purple lover.

I am also working on a shell crown, something that is like a seaweed boa (im going to need all the warmth possible), and I have some camel colored fishnets that will undoubtably be a savior for my arms.

Now to put it all together...

I have been dying to get this wilton food dye (paste form) because I heard that it has the most vibrant colors. And it has a 12 pack of colors for 14 bucks. amazing. i even bought a couple more of the larger sized ones. so very excited.

Weather affects us, no? All the sun that San Francisco has been getting is great, but bad weather makes me more productive. For sure. Its not because I have a beach scene screen saver-its the weather that forces me inside. I guess thats why San Franciscians are so productive...fog, greyness, and cold, oh it also makes us chubby drinkers and shopaholics.

Fungi and Fungirl

When I was young, like kindergarten young, I called myself Fun Sakuma. Wrote it on all my drawings, papers, and introduced myself as such. I wish that I could still insist such fun out of everything... but its not always possible. Although I still consider myself a Fun girl I also have a obsession (read: OBESS-ION) with mushrooms.

So I sew some fabric, squishy, muchkin ones (you can use remnants, left overs, napkins, pillow cases, old shirts, what have you)

cut out 4 triangular pieces of fabric a, a donut piece of fabric a, a rectangular piece of fabric b, and a circular piece of fabric b

sew the triangular ones together to make the mushroom cap:

sew the rectangle together and sew the circle to the bottom to make the stem:

sew the donut hole to the other end of the stem:

attach the mushroom cap to the donut hole, but leave a little section open so that you can pull it right side out and then stuff:

fill the sucker with guts:

cute and fin! attach string to make it an ornament, make a whole bunch to make a mini mush-forrest, make big ones as stuffed animal-pillows.

yayyayay for my first semi-tute!

remember: not a fungi are mushrooms, but all mushrooms are fungi... much like how the church views jesus in the dead sea scrolls...

I always thought I was a pretty realistic person. Except I now know that fabric/craft stores are a major exception. I especially like the children's aisle. Pre-made fun kits have mermaids, fairy tale components, and glitter. I want. In fact I almost jumped up and down when I found glittered glue sticks for my glue gun.

And then I left the craft store with birds for my hair.

I am certainly on a craft store binge. Crafts and creating costumes for the next occasion crowds my waking hours.

Raise your hand if you could be locked in a craft store all night, not sleep a wink, and then produce a table full of crafts like a dozen elves had been snorting addy.

Honk your horn if you just can't leave the fabric store till your caressed all the textiles, stretched the length of them, and tested the durability- as if your life depended on making the right material choice.

By the way, real students real students make their own costumes.

Listology

I think if you where to look at a strain of my DNA, you would find it in list form. I write lists about writing lists. Yes, lists keep me sane. I would much rather write a list than take a shower; it feels cleaner. Currently, besides the daily to-do list, I have weekly, monthly, long-term, shopping, adventures, and even 'words i like' lists going. Now that I have re-started this blog, I can now cross this off my 'long-term' list... now onto the yogalates and keeping with tennis, I suppose.

I could write a list on aliases i go by, the different types of list that also feature the words 'write ______ list' on it, and a really really short (2 week old, that lasted less than 24 hours) list that entitles "what i spent". hmmm.
